The science

Skin holds water with its moisturizing factor — a mix of sodium PCA, lactate, urea, free amino acids and sugars inside the outer skin cells. It is water-soluble, so every cleanse takes some of it. Lunera puts it back: sodium PCA, sodium lactate, betaine and a set of free amino acids top up the NMF, saccharide isomerate binds to keratin and stays through washing, and snow mushroom extract and sodium hyaluronate add water-holding polysaccharides on top. A thin lipid layer of jojoba, coconut, sunflower, tamanu and borage oils slows water leaving, and panthenol, oat, calendula and centella keep it calm. Water first, lipids second, nothing to mask it with — this one is unscented.

How to use

SACCHARIDE ISOMERATE

A carbohydrate complex from plant sugars that resembles the skin's own moisturizing factor. It binds to keratin in the outer skin and is not rinsed away — it stays until skin sheds on its own, which is why the hydration outlasts a cleanse.

In 12 women aged around 40, a 1% saccharide isomerate solution applied twice daily for 4 weeks cut water loss (TEWL) after tape-stripping by 20%, reduced clinically graded dry-skin signs by 20%, and kept skin hydrated for 72 hours after the last application. Supplier in-vivo data, small panel.

SODIUM PCA + AMINO ACIDS

Sodium PCA, sodium lactate and a set of free amino acids — arginine, glycine, serine, proline and others — are the main components of the skin's moisturizing factor. They are the small, water-binding molecules that keep the outer skin flexible, and they wash out with every cleanse.

In 36 adults, an emulsion with 1% moisturizing factor humectants (sodium lactate or sodium PCA) raised forearm skin hydration by more than 25% versus both untreated skin and a glycerin-only placebo over 3 hours, measured by corneometer. Sodium PCA reached peak hydration at 60 minutes and held it for the rest of the test. Small panel, formulation study.

SNOW MUSHROOM

Tremella fuciformis extract, a polysaccharide that holds water in a similar way to hyaluronic acid. It forms a light film on the skin that slows water leaving, which is why it is sometimes called botanical hyaluronic acid.

Cosmetic formulations containing Tremella fuciformis extract reduced water loss through the skin (TEWL) by 12.4% compared with the same formulation without it, with hydration of the outer skin confirmed by instrument.
