The science

Dull, rough-feeling skin is usually two problems at once: not enough water in the outer layer, and dead cells that are not shedding evenly. Aloura works on both. Urea and saccharide isomerate pull water in and hold it, and saccharide isomerate stays bound to the skin through washing. Urea also loosens compacted dry build-up so it can shed, and bakuchiol, a plant compound that acts on many of the same pathways as retinol, encourages even renewal without irritation. Sodium PCA, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate add water-binding support; bisabolol keeps it calm. The base is a light milk of plant-derived esters that absorb on contact instead of sitting on the surface. No fragrance.

UREA

A component of the skin's own moisturizing factor, second on this ingredient list. It pulls water into the outer skin and loosens the dry, flaky build-up that makes skin feel rough and look dull.

In 33 women with dry, atopic-prone skin, a 10% urea lotion applied to one forearm for 14 days significantly improved skin hydration, water loss (TEWL) and investigator-graded dryness versus the untreated arm at days 7 and 14 (p<0.05). The dryness improvement was still there at day 21, a week after the last application.

BAKUCHIOL

12 WEEKS

A plant compound from the babchi seed that switches on many of the same skin-renewal pathways as retinol with less of the peeling and stinging. It refines the look of texture and evens tone, and it is fine to use morning and night.

In a randomized, double-blind 12-week trial of 44 people, 0.5% bakuchiol cream twice daily reduced wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation as much as 0.5% retinol once daily, with no statistical difference between them. Retinol users reported more scaling and stinging.
